DOLOMITE CYCLING CHALLENGE, LIENZ: June (Every year)

The Austrian town of Lienz demonstrates the meaning of pedal power at the Dolomite Cycling Challenge, as 2000 super-fit cyclists turn out to take on a gruelling mountain route.

Both the dramatic peaks and the steep climbs are simply breathtaking. Competitors have to muster enough determination and stamina to cross the finishing line on this high-altitude monster of a race.

The Dolomitenrundfahrt comprises two courses: the standard 112-kilometre course, and the 187-kilometre marathon featuring an altitude difference of 3000 metres. Crowds come from all over Europe to cheer the cyclists on, while a programme of side events including open-air concerts, mountain sprints and parties accompanies the race.
