PANTHEON all year
|
This majestic building in the heart of the Latin Quarter of Paris was constructed in the 18th-century and is seen as the first great neo-classical monument.
Originally intended as the replacement for the ruined Eglise Sainte-Geneviève, soon after completion the building was changed to a mausoleum for great Frenchmen and this remains its function today.
Only the most important figures in French culture and society are interred here - among the great names are Voltaire, Rousseau, Victor Hugo, Emile Zola, Louis Braille, Alexandre Dumas and the architect of this monument to France's national heroes, Jacques-Germain Soufflot.
