MOESGAARD MUSEUM: all year |
In 1952 a peat cutter unexpectedly encountered a dead man's body with red hair, in a marsh near Grauballe in East Jutland. The body, that everyone first thought to be the local drunkard, turned out to be a man who was more than 2000 years old, and who had been cruelly executed during the iron age and then thrown into the marsh to rot. This caused a world sensation. The body was amazingly well preserved because of the unique chemical composition of the marsh plants, and his hair, lips and beard were still intact. Even an identification of his last meal was possible. This major historical find is now the Moesgaard Museum's biggest attraction. The museum contains collections from the stone-age to the Viking-age, and the permanent exhibition also includes reconstructions of iron-age houses, stone- and bronze-age graves and a Viking church. Each year the Museum also holds several special exhibitions that display different archaeological finds around the world.
