MUSEUM OF NATIONAL ANTIQUITIES: all year |
From the Stone Age to the 16th century, this fascinating museum is an invaluable glimpse into the myth-ridden world of Scandinavian history, as well as a sweeping overview of more than 12,000 years of mankind's activities. Hear how, as late as 1070, the bodies of sacrificed men and animals hung in the grove near the temple of Uppsala that was thought to be home to the gods of thunder, war and pleasure; or how Olov Skotonung, the first Swedish Christian king, battled against such Paganism. Thanks to to an old law that claims precious metal more than 100 years old as property of as the state, the museum can show ancient treasures in the Gold Room that far surpass similar collections at other European museums. From Viking swords to prehistoric cave paintings, this museum is a real treasure trove waiting to be discovered. |
