MARITIME MUSEUM: all year |
Discover Gothenburg's vibrant shipyard history that hit its heyday during the first half of the 20th century ? but met its end in the 1980s. The Maritime Museum protects this part of Gothenburg's heritage, preserving its history from the 17th Century to today. The harbour and shipyards are recreated in large scale models, some of them in cross-section. Many fascinating trophies of marine archaeology are on display, from porcelain cargo and everyday items from the life onboard, to magnificent merchandise brought home from China. Many of these items have been rescued from the famous Stora Sophia, a Danish warship that sunk in 1645, or from the East India Company's ship, Gotheborg, which was grounded in 1745 on its way into the city's harbour. There is also a magnificent collection of figureheads. Besides all this, the museum also has an aquarium and vivarium where you can study life beneath the waves. |
