ARABELLA, OPÉRA BASTILLE: 14 June - 10 July 2012

Located in the historical Place de la Bastille area, L'Opéra Bastille (Bastille Opera) is home to many of Paris's opera and ballet performances. From its inauguration in 1989, this modern opera house has played host for renowned performances from a wide variety of artists.

As the last collaboration between composer Richard Strauss and librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Arabella is a lyric opera set in Vienna during the 1860s which combines the elements of romance and comedy.

With financial troubles pressuring the young Arabella to marry, she is thrust into uncertainty as potential suitors attempt to woo her. Despite a line of suitors awaiting her and an ominous prediction from a fortune teller, Arabella becomes enthralled by a stranger who captures her attention from afar.

The unconventional twists in Arabella highlight the lengths individuals go through in the pursuit of love as this romantic affair creates a misunderstanding between Arabella and her sister, Zdenka.

Conducted by Phillipee Jordan, Arabella introduces the world-renowned soprano, Renee Fleming as the title role.
