THE GRAN THEATRE DE LICEU: PELLEAS ET MELISANDE 2012 |
A night out at the Gran Theatre de Liceu Opera is to experience opera the way the authors and composers intended. In glorious surroundings, just off the famous Las Ramblas, it attracts the creme de la creme of international opera stars; it has a hugely diverse and vast repertory as well as exceptional acoustics.
As the Prince Golaud wanders into the forest, he encounters a mysterious, beautiful girl who gives him only her name, Mélisande. After conversing with her, he manages to get her to follow him in order not to leave her alone in the dark.
Six months later, he announces to his old blind grandfather, the King of Arkel, through mail that he has gotten married with Mélisande even though he still does not know anything about her but her name. His grandfather forgives him and allows him to come back to the cattle with his new wife and his son from his previous marriage, Yniold.
When Mélisande arrives at her new home, she immediately feels ill-at-ease in the dark atmosphere that characterizes the cattle. She finds comfort in Pelléas, the brother of Golaud, whom she starts spending time with; but she ends up losing the ring offered by Golaud in the water of the "Blind Men's Well" where Pelléas brought her. This loss could have been insignificant if Golaud hadn't come back from the forest wounded by his horse that, without reason, made him fall at the exact moment that the ring touched the water.
After Golaud notices that the ring is missing on his wife's finger, Mélisande confesses the loss of the ring but lies about the place she lost it. Furious, Golaud commands her to get the ring back right away even though the sun has been sleeping for a few hours; he tells her to take Pelléas to protect her. This event will solidify the complicity between Pelléas and Mélisande but at the same time it will increase Golaud's jealousy, which will drive him crazy...
