LUCIAN FREUD: PORTRAITS, NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY, 9 February - 27 May 2012 |
Situated near London's bustling Trafalgar Square, the National Portrait Gallery hosts an exciting range of exhibitions each year. It is renowned for showcasing the latest and greatest artistic talent, and the upcoming 'Lucian Freud: Portraits' is no exception.
This major exhibition spans 70 years of Freud's life and will feature over 100 portraits, including several that have never been seen before. Freud's artistic process was notoriously drawn-out and meticulous; his subjects often had to commit to months of sitting. This focus resulted in engrossing portraits that captured unspoken aspects of his subjects' personalities. His 'Girl in a Dark Jacket', dating from 1947, has the same unsettlingly intimate quality as more recent works such as 'The Brigadier' and the 2008 'Big Sue', which sold for 17.2m at auction.
Captivating, thought-provoking and certain to be a sell-out, this exhibition not only examines Freud's expansive portrait career, but offers a fascinating insight into the human condition.
