YAYOI KUSAMA, TATE MODERN, 9 February - 5 June 2012 |
Featuring dramatic installations, vibrant paintwork and spellbinding patterns, the Tate Modern's upcoming Yayoi Kusama exhibition promises a fascinating exploration of this extraordinary artist's career. Born and raised in Japan, Kusama made her mark on the art world with her distinctive polka-dot paintings. At the age of 27 she moved to the US where she made contact with artists such as Donald Judd and Georgia O'Keeffe, and now lives permanently in a Japanese psychiatric facility. This diverse display reflects her colourful, sometimes painful, life as one of Japan's most celebrated contemporary artists.
Kusama's life-long experimentation with different media adds to the richness of this collection. Bold installation pieces such as 'The Passing Winter' (pictured) are contrasted with delicately textured 'accumulation' sculptures and, of course, the polka dot prints that are now synonymous with her name. The largest ever display of Kusama's work in the UK, this visual feast is sure to appeal to both modern art connoisseurs and newcomers to Kusama's unique artistic perspective.
