Zeus' notion that Delphi was the belly-button of the world may not be anatomically accurate but make a trip to Delphi and you'll see what he had in mind: a ring of towering mountains plunge down to a fertile valley planted with olive trees and a strange sense of quiet reigns, giving you the impression that this really could be the centre of the world. The archaeological site of Delphi and its museum perch on a cliff half way between the mountain peaks and the plain below, affording a spectacular view. But it is not only its natural beauty that makes Delphi an essential stop on any travel itinerary, for this is the site of one of the most intriguing elements of Greek history. Delphi reached its height of fame as an oracle and shrine to the god Apollo in 8 BC. Everyone from politicians and the army to ordinary people seeking advice on their love life would visit the shrine on special days to put their questions to the priestess known as the Pythia. Having performed certain rituals that put her in a trance, she would give an answer to the worshipper’s question which a male priest would then interpret and pronounce in riddle-like verses. Nowadays you can see the well-preserved remains of buildings such as the temple of Apollo, the theatre and the gymnasium on the site itself while the archaeological museum next door houses the statues, vases and other items that were offered as gifts to the shrine by its worshippers.
