CosmoCaixa, Museum, Barcelona: All Year

A delight both for the senses and the mind, CosmoCaixa is a hands-on science experience for people of all ages.

CosmoCaixa, a recent endeavour taken on by the all-encompassing la Caixa Foundation, replaced the Barcelona Science Museum in 2004 after a large-scale remodelling project which quadrupled the size of the original building. The institute that emerged was the largest and most innovative science museum in Spain, covering 30,000 square metres and five floors. The museum is a hands-on experience in astronomy, geology, mathematics, biology and more, conceptualised by architects Robert and Esteve Terradas as an open space with no barriers standing between visitors and the exhibits. This allows visitors, adults and children alike, to have as interactive and involved an experience as possible.

The permanent exhibitions at the museum include a planetarium, where visitors can look up at the night sky and learn about distant stars and galaxies, a spiral staircase going up all five floors around a massive Acariquara tree, lifelike sculptures of Einstein and Galileo at the entrance, the Room of Matter, where children can touch and interact with all kinds of different organic materials and the Flooded Rainforest exhibition. Many more temporary exhibitions are featured on a regular basis, including lectures, classes and forums on everything science-related, so you're sure to have a new and exciting experience each time you visit CosmoCaixa.
