Japan. Love and War Stories, Palazzo Albergati, 24 March - 09 September 2018

This is archived material. It is for reference purposes only.

Traditionally, the thought of Japan conjures images of geishas, samurai and cherry blossoms. Well, prepare for all that and more in the exhibition ‘Giappone. Love and war stories’ at the Palazzo Albergati.

Upon hearing the title, you expect to learn about tales of passion and intrigue...and this exhibition certainly delivers. Through the traditional ukiyo-e art form, fantastical images of warriors, courtesans, demons, and kabuki actors come forth, presenting both the stuff of dreams and nightmares. Over 200 works have been collected from masters in the field such as Hiroshige, Hokusei and Kuniyoshi. Their woodcut prints are  accompanied by artefacts such as garments and fans to further your experience.

The exhibition is comprised of ten sections, each showing a different part of culture in Japan from the  17th-19th century. However, besides romantic images such as geisha and samurai, the Japanese landscape and erotic shunga prints also make an appearance.
