Until the 21st January 2018, the MAPFRE Foundation in Barcelona will host an exhibition around Rodin’s The Gates of Hell, one of the iconic works of the French artist.
“El infierno según Rodin” (Hell according to Rodin) analyses the creative process that led to the sculptor’s tormented and sensual view of hell, which he masterfully depicted in The Gates of Hell, inspired by Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy and Charles Baudelaire’s The Flowers of Evil. The monumental sculpture, completed in 1917, 37 years after it was commissioned, became a seminal influence in the fields of arts and sculpture of the 20th century. It was also a starting point for many of the sculptures he created, such as The Kiss, The Thinker, The Shadows and Ugolino and his sons.
The exhibition, organised in collaboration with the Rodin Museum (Paris), features 150 works by the French master, including models, photos and rarely displayed drawings.
