Lita Cabellut: Retrospective Exhibition, Fundació Vila Casas, Barcelona: 4 October 2017-27 May 2018

This is archived material. It is for reference purposes only.

During the next months, the works of versatile Spanish artist Lita Cabellut will be under the spotlight at the Espai Volart 2, the recently inaugurated exhibition space of the Vila Casas Foundation.

This retrospective exhibition has two interesting starting points: on the one hand, it is actually a tribute to Cabellut’s artístic career, and it is organized by Cabellut herself, in collaboration with Antonio Vila Casas, thus giving us great insight into the artist’s life and the last 10 years of artístic creation.

Born a gipsy girl in the province of Aragón, Cabellut had a rough start; she spent part of her childhood in the streets of Barcelona as a beggar and a scam artist until she was adopted by a well off Catalan family that finally gave her the chance to explore the arts and become familiar with the artists that influenced her style: Rembrandt, Goya, Velázquez, Pollock and Barceló, among others.

Cabellut is best known for her large-scale works, new fresco techniques and hyperrealist paintings:  Take a close  look  at the skin of the people in her portraits, one of the key features in her canvases. However, she is best described as a prolific artist who has a multifaceted approach to the arts, trying her hand (very successfully) at painting, sculpture, poetry, video, drawing and photography.

The exhibition features some of her best works, such as “Dillusion” (2008), “Coco” (2011), “Frida” (2011), “Camarón” (2011), “After the show” (2012), “Black tulip” (2014) and the recent “Flower installations” (2016-17), a perfect opportunity to discover her characteristic style, palette and subject-matter.
