Curator Tanya Barson has put together a comprehensive body of works by Rosemarie Castoro that aims at exploring, in full detail, for the first time, the life and work of the American artist, focusing on the art produced between 1964 and 1979.
Castoro (1939-2015) was one of the very few highly acclaimed women in the New York Minimalists, though her career goes far beyond Minimalism: she started out as a graphic artist, became a dancer and choreographer, turned to painting and explored performance, poetry, sculpture, installation and conceptual arts in the process. Her most unique contribution to the world of art is arguably her ability to establish and stress a communion between painting, sculpture, drawing, language and performance.
The diversity of Castoro’s work is reflected in the 250 pieces on display. They include conceptual installations, Post-Minimalist sculpture and performance, among others- as is the importance of feminism and political activism that underlies her production.
