Skylon, Restaurant and Grill, Southbank Centre, London

Another of the Southbank options is Skylon, both a restaurant and a grill in the Royal Festival Hall. The restaurant is a classy affair, designed to reflect the interior of the refurbished Royal Festival Hall, with ambient lighting, smooth surfaces and spectacular views. As well as the à la carte option, the restaurant also offers several set menus; the rather sumptuous six course Tasting Menu includes rich delicacies like pan fried foie gras or roast breast of free-range goose, confit leg beignet, heritage carrots, romanesco and orange jus for £59.00, and the carefully selected wine pairing for £49.00.

Theatre menu, the Evening Standard and a lunch set menu are also available.

If you want wonderful food without the formality, the Skylon Grill is a more relaxed experience, with a different, but still impressive, menu that is just as enticing.

Begin with the green winter vegetable salad with truffle emulsion and for mains try the pan fried sea bream fillet, savoy cabbage and seaweed butter sauce or the lamb burger with minted yogurt and sweet potato wedges.

Tapas style plates are available at the bar, where a full range of drinks is served, including some of London’s most inventive cocktails from £11.50. There is a seasonal range, as well as Skylon classics including Babicka vodka infused with earl grey, stirred with rhubarb liqueur and freshly pressed lemon juice finished with bergamot essence, served straight up in a martini glass (‘Mr. Grey’) or Grey Goose, Elderflower liqueur, lemon juice shaken and finished with prosecco, served in flute glass (‘Grey Goose Fizz’).
