University Library, Bologna: All Year

Full of history and prestige, the University Library is a fantastic place to visit and get inspired.

Naturally, the library of the oldest university in Europe accumulates enormous wealth of written and printed heritage – now amounting to over 1.250.000 volumes. The range of studies and stunning exhibits goes back to the very foundations of academia, stretching well beyond Sir Isaac Newton. One of the highlights is the museum of Obstetrics. Often found quite shocking and extravagant, its models show the transformation of childbirth from the magic of midwifery to science in the 18th century.

Thousands of volumes of books stretching as far as the eye can see is a truly spectacular site. Moreover, the rooms themselves are fabulous masterpieces with incredible friezes and scenes. Over 400 portraits of illustrious figures and 16th century frescoes turn the visit into an intellectual and visual feast for its visitors.
