Rubens, perhaps not entirely of his own volition, was a prolific painter of royal portraits. Usually associated with magnificent historical scenes, his excelled in the domain of portraiture, travelling around the most prestigious courts of Europe.

The show sheds light on thesis fascinating life: he enjoyed an unparalleled social position amongst his contemporary artists and was famed for his erudition and wit. A firm favourite amongst royals and politicians, he played an important diplomatic role, as the show demonstrates  through his relationships with the most powerful political players of  his time, including Philippe IV, Louis XIII and Marie de’ Medici. Several of Reubens most famous contemporaries are exhibited alongside him, including Pourbus, Champaigne, Velázques and Van Dyck. The Musée du Luxembourg is a wonderful setting for the show, providing an appropriately grand and courtly backdrop to these tales of diplomatic intrigue and political gossip. Just as interesting a history lesson as it is an impressive display of excellent portraits, the exhibition runs from the 4th October until the 14th January and should not be missed, by fans of Old Masters and historians alike.
