Museo dell'opera del Duomo, Florence All year

The Opera del Duomo was founded in 1296 by the Florentine Republic to monitor the construction of the famous Florence cathedral.

The Opera del Duomo was founded in 1296 by the Florentine Republic to monitor the construction of the famous Florence cathedral.  Originally known as the “Fabbriceria della Cattedrale di Firenze” or Florence Cathedral Works, their main task is to preserve the monuments.  In 1891, the museum was established to house the masterpieces that were removed from the Duomo, bell tower, and baptistery.

The first section of the museum shows Gothic art and objects used by Brunelleschi in the construction of his dome.  Moving onto the main room on the second floor, there are choir lofts sculpted by Donatello and Luca della Robbia.  The museum also offers works by Pisano from the bell tower and by Ghiberti from the cathedral.

This refuge for art is truly a hidden gem!  The Museo dell’opera del Duomo will amaze you with art from centuries ago!
