Piazza della Signoria, Florence

Piazza della Signoria is one of Florence’s most valuable squares from the thirteenth century.

Piazza della Signoria is one of Florence’s most valuable squares from the thirteenth century.  The square was originally owned by the Uberti family, a wealthy and powerful Florentine family.  However, after a defeat in battle the square became property of the Guelphs.

In 1322, Palazzo Vecchio was completed, giving the square a prominent position in the political importance and history of the city.  Many citizens gathered in the square for important political events and announcements.  Although the square is not that large, it is a vibrant location due to the many attractions nearby.

There are many statues situated in the square.  The most noteworthy one is a replica of Michelangelo’s David designed in 1873.  Others include sculptures created by Baccio Bandinelli, Bartolomeo Ammannati, and Giambologna.

Piazza della Signoria has always been a symbol of livelihood in Florence.  Between the collection of statues and Palazzo Vecchio, this open air museum unfolds a myriad of treasures to discover!
