The Florence baptistery is a very important landmark.  Having possibly been built in the 6th century, the baptistery contains many valuable and historic pieces.

The most important part of the baptistery is the panels on the doors located on the north side.  In 1401, a competition was held to choose an artist to create the panels.  Lorenzo Ghiberti was selected over Brunelleschi to design the panels.  The doors were finished in 1424 which depict biblical scenes.  Often considered the best work Ghiberti created, the original panels are now housed in the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo and the replicas are found in the original location.

The oldest pair of doors are bronze ones found on the south side created by Andrea Pisano in 1330.  These doors portray biblical scenes of St. John which happen to be the original doors that unfortunately are in desperate need of a restoration.

The interior of the baptistery contains beautiful mosaics preserved from the 13th century.  It is highly recommended to visit the Opera del Duomo Museum where all of the originals copies of artwork is held.
