San Miniato al Monte, Florence

San Miniato al Monte is a Romanesque church located on one of the highest points in Florence.

San Miniato al Monte is a Romanesque church located on one of the highest points in Florence.  Built from 1865 to 1873 by Giuseppe Poggi, this church is a popular location for a great view of the city!

The church was built on top of a burial of the Christian martyr Saint Minias.  The façade in the front of the church contains a mosaic made of white and green marble which depicts St. Minias with Jesus.

The interior of the church is quite different from most Florentine churches.  The choir is placed on a raised floor above the crypt.  In the center is the Chapel of the Crucifix which is decorated with vibrant panels by Michelozzo in 1448.

The church also has a bell tower designed by architect Baccio d’Agnolo in 1523.  The tower was used to protect the city from invaders during the Siege of Florence.

No matter which section of the San Miniato al Monte you are admiring, it is all truly amazing and full of history!
