Church of Orsanmichele, Florence

Being a historically and culturally important building in Florence, it is highly recommended to visit the Church of Orsanmichele.

The Church of Orsanmichele is a very unique church in Florence.  Its name derives from its location and purpose since it was the oratory of St. Michael and was enclosed by a vegetable garden.  The structure was built in 1336 as a market and by 1380 it had been converted into a church.

The guilds made an agreement that they would each select a statue of their patron saint to help decorate the outside of the church.  The sculptures were completed by Donatello, Ghiberti, and other artists as well.

However, in order to preserve the beauty of the statues, they are now found in the Museum of Orsanmichele.  The inside of the church was designed in a Gothic style and remains almost intact since its creation.
