Mercato Nuovo, Florence

Mercato Nuovo is an outdoor market in the historic center of Florence.  Built in the 16^th century, many different items are sold here!  From tourist souvenirs to clothing to leather goods, you can find just about anything.

The local Florentines nickname this market the “Mercato del Porcellino” ('the piglet market') after the statue of a pig, a popular attraction: legend has it that whoever rubs the snout of the pig will return to Florence.  

The “Pietra dello scandolo” or the Stone of Shame stand in the centre of the market, marking the place where merchants were publicly ridiculed during the Renaissance before they were sent into exile. 

Mercato Nuovo is a popular location to go shopping for everyone.  Almost always reasonably priced, you will leave with a unique item!
