Discover the thrilling and exotic art of long gone civilizations. The museum has a rich collection of artefacts such as ritual masks from Mexico and West Africa, engraved human skulls and trophy heads from South America…... Paris is the only other city in France to have a museum dedicated to the same art.

The museum is in the magnificent Vieille Charité, a former almshouse (a charitable, public institution for the poor, the homeless and the aged), built between 1671 and 1749 in Baroque style designed by the famous Marseille architect Pierre Puget. Although the architect died before he finished the building, his Baroque chapel in Vieille Charité is seen today as one of his most original designs. However, the facade of the chapel dates back to the 19th century. The famous French architect, Le Corbusier also contributed to well-being of the building, when he saved Vieille Charité from destruction in the 1950s.

In the first floor of the building you can find Musée d'archéologie méditerranéenne (the Museum of Mediterranean Archaeology).
