A little museum, next to the Old Port and le Panier district, where you can see the rare remains of a Roman commercial warehouse.
The dolia or large storage vases dating back to Roman times were discovered here in 1947 during the reconstruction of buildings destroyed in World War II, when the Nazis bombed a large part of the old town in 1943. Musée des Docks Romains was opened in 1963 thanks to the well-known art historian and archaeologist, Fernand Benoit who fought for the discovered relics to be kept on-site.
Discover the history of Romans in Provence and the activities of Marseille as a port from the 6th century B.C. to the 4th century A.D. Apart from the dolia the museum also owns a magnificent collection of underwater archaeological items.
