Four des Navettes, Bakery, Marseille

The oldest bakery in Marseille is right next to the Abbey of Saint-Victor, just 5 minutes walk from the Old Port.

Four des Navettes bakery is one of the best places to buy navettes and other traditional Marseille treats. You cannot leave the city without trying some of their navettes! The boat-shaped cookies were named after the unmanned boat with a wooden sculpture of Virgin Mary that arrived on the shores of Marseille in the 13th century and is now considered one of the main treats of the local cuisine. The recipe of the cookies was carefully guarded for a couple of centuries, with the three families which owned the bakery from 1781 handing it down from one generation to another.

The uniqueness of the bakery doesn’t end here: they still own and use a round oven built in 1781 on the Roman model.

Every year during Chandeleur (the Candlemas) on February 2nd at 8am, the Archbishop comes to Four des Navettes and gives his blessing to the famous oven and les navettes cookies. And it is believed that if you have some of the cookies and candles from St. Victor’s abbey which have received this blessing it will bring great happiness to your family for the year to come.

Six navettes will cost you €5,10 and 12 of the famous cookies will set you back  €10. The bakery also has other treats, for example, Marseillotes - traditional candy of Marseille (€8 for 85g box).
