La Sucrière, Lyon

On the docks in La Confluence is a former sugar warehouse, now transformed into a cultural centre and exhibition space, hosting some of Lyon's best and coolest events.

First built in the 1930s, La Sucrière was used as a factory warehouse to store sugar on the docks of Lyon’s Confluence (an area that was previously an industrial wasteland, at the tip where the Rhône and the Saône rivers meet). In 2003 when the entire neighbourhood underwent a huge redevelopment project, La Sucrière kept the name but transformed everything else. After a complete architectural renewal, it was reborn as a cultural centre and exhibition space devoted to contemporary art. Now, one of the shining gems in La Confluence, it is an immense, unique three floor structure with vast floor spaces and mezzaninesthat still echo its past as a factory but are also easily adaptable for all kinds of events and exhibitions.

It is most well known for hosting the Biennale d’art contemporain de Lyon - a contemporary art and dance festival held every two years, with main exhibitionsshared between La Sucrière and the Musée d’art contemporain.
