Saint-Nizier Church, Lyon

This Gothic church, located in the centre of Lyon, is one of the city's oldest, with a history dating back to the second century.

This Gothic church is located in the centre of Lyon, between Bellecour and Hôtel de Ville, and has a history dating back to the early days of Christianity in the second century where it was the site of a religious Roman monument. As one of the oldest churches in Lyon, little is known about its origins, but its name is believed to have come from a sixth-century bishop, Nicetius of Lyon, who was buried at the site of the church. Construction began at the end of the 14th century but the building you see today was not completed until the 19th century, as it underwent a huge reconstruction after large parts of it were destroyed during the Revolution. Look out for Saint-Nizier’s most unique feature: the two asymmetrical towers, one from the 15th century and the other from the 19th.

Mass takes place at 12.10 from Tuesday to Saturday and 19.00 Tuesday to Friday.
