Local market with a wacky, brightly coloured roof
Built on the site of the former Santa Caterina Convent, in 2005 this traditional market was given an external makeover by architects Enric Miralles and Benendetta Tagliabue, making it yet another of Barcelona’s architectural icons.
The unusual, undulating roof seems to almost float above the market, and the brightly coloured, kaleidescopic ceramic mosaics that decorate the roof function as a visual metaphor for the sea of fruit and vegetables that can be found within. It is attached to the ground with long thin strands, both incorporating and developing the old structure. The underside of the roof is structured with a warm-coloured wooden panelling that makes the whole place feel very welcoming. Unfortunately, the birds have the best view of this architectural masterpiece, as it is impossible to admire it properly from ground level.
