Plaça del Rei, Barcelona

Plaça del Rei (or the King’s Square) is a 14th-century public square in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, and is one of the best examples of the city’s medieval past

As you step into the square you are faced by the various buildings of the Palau Reial Major, including King Martin’s Watchtower which rises up to the left behind the palace and could be compared to a huge dove cote. The Lieutenant’s Palace is on your left, a beautiful 16th-century building with an internal patio, which currently houses the Archive of the Crown of Aragon. Directly opposite this is the Royal Chapel of St Agatha, complete with typical Gothic stained-glass windows. Completing the square is Padellàs House, a 15th-century palace which was moved here from Mercaders Street in 1931 and now houses the Barcelona City History Museum.
