Rubens. Painter of Sketches, Exhibition, Prado Museum, Madrid: 10 April-5 August 2018

This is archived material. It is for reference purposes only.

This exhibition focuses on sketches by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), one of the most outstanding and versatile painters in history.

Although he is usually associated with the corpulent, fleshy bodies of half naked ladies frolicking on river banks, this exhibition shows he is equally apt at putting his pencil to oil sketching. “Rubens. Painter of Sketches”, organised in cooperation with the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, will shed some more light on this facet of the Flemish master.

The 82 oil sketches selected for the exhibition are displayed along well-chosen context material (around 20 paintings, drawings and more) that provides an excellent background to the already outstanding sketches.
