The MAPFRE Foundation in Madrid allows us to discover the deep friendship between three great artists of the 20th century

André Derain (1880-1954), Balthus (Balthasar Kłossowski) (1908-2001) and Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) all shared an admiration for art of the past, primitive cultures, and the figure. In a period of artistic abstraction and surrealism, their common vision led to a great degree of respect between the three artists, and in turn gave way to a long friendship.

The exhibition, fruit of various years of investigation, displays more than 200 works gathered from numerous private collections and international institutions. It focuses on works between the 1930s and 60s and is divided into six sections: The Cultural View; Silent Lives; The Model; Interval; The Dream; and The Dark Claw. Through displaying the paintings, sculptures, drawings and photographs together, it reveals the shared interests of the artists.
