Toulouse-Lautrec and the Pleasures of the Belle Époque, Exhibition, The Canal Foundation, Madrid: Until 6 May 2018

This is archived material. It is for reference purposes only.

One of only two complete remaining collections of Toulouse-Lautrec’s posters come to Spain for the first time.

Post-Impressionist artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) left a hugely dense body of work behind his legacy, the impact of which is just as powerful today as it was when he first produced it. His sharp eye and characteristic strong lines managed to elevate posters to the status of art, as well as re-establishing the advertising role that they retain today.

The 33 posters on display, on loan from the Musée d’Ixelles (Brussels), represent some of the significant changes that took place at the end of the 19th and start of the 20th century, affecting society’s entire mindset. The exhibition is divided into four sections: The Pleasures of the Night. The Parisian Cabaret; The Pleasures of the Shows; Literary and Artistic Pleasures; and Modern pleasures. Consumerism. Through Lautrec’s artistic vision, the posters pictorially document the birth of consumerism and show how society became increasingly hedonistic, prioritising pleasure over anything else.
