Món Sant Benet
A world of delights
The impressive Món Sant Benet, situated in Sant Fruitós de Bages, only 40 minutes from Barcelona, first opened its doors to the public in 2007 after the renovation of Sant Benet de Bages, a Benedictine monastery that dates back to 960. The monastery reached its peak in the 12th and 13th centuries. Then, after a period of decline, it was bought by the Montserrat monastery to establish a College of Arts and a home for elderly monks in the late 16th century.
In 1835 the monks were expelled under the Confiscation Act and the monastery was put up for auction.
In 1907 the site was bought by the family of Ramon Casas, a Catalan painter, and transformed the grounds into their summer residence. The restoration project was assigned to the modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch.. Between 2000 and 2007 a last series of renovations was carried out before it opened to the public.
Món Sant Benet also includes the Alícia Foundation, a centre for innovation and research in the fields of gastronomy and healthy eating, which has been associated with some of Spain’s top chefs and leading scientists.
