Bunkers del Carmel, Barcelona

Visit the former Spanish Civil War bunkers, learn a little more about Barcelona and enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the city.

Little evidence remains of Barcelona’s turbulent 20th century, except for - of course – the Bunkers del Carmel. High up within the neighbourhood of ‘El Carmel’ you’ll find the old concrete bunkers that were once used as anti-aircraft batteries during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s. Although Civil War in Spain came to an end in 1939, the bunkers were not left unoccupied. During the 1940s locals seeking shelter quickly occupied the site and a shanty town developed. Abandoned in the early 1990s, the concrete bunkers have since become seating platforms for students, travellers and locals alike.  Given the stunning panoramic views of Barcelona, it is easy to see why the bunkers attract many visitors.
