When wondering through the trendy 3rd arrondissement, the striking panoramic views and permanent collections of the Pompidou aren’t something to be missed and la décennie radicale by André Derain is certainly a spectacle worth seeing. Nestled on the top floor, in Gallery 2, you will find yourself immersed in a chronological evolution of Derain’s work. From humble ink sketches to portraits of friend and fellow painter Henri Matisse, the visionary breadth of André Derain’s work is incredibly diverse.
The exhibition has been organised so you can see how Derain develops as he takes glimmers of influence from books, cultures and other artists throughout the years. We learn about his life in the military service through crude ink and pencil illustrations which he drew for Maurice de Vlaminck and gain an insight into his affection for photography through a compilation of unusual and captivating black and white negatives. Once you approach the year Derain met Matisse, there is a striking change in his artistic approach and it’s hard not to be absolutely captivated by his delicate brush strokes and fantastical warm colour palette.
Make sure you leave enough time to take in the Les montagnes a Collioure and the Vue sur la tamise, Londres as the sheer energy contained in each painting will leave you inspired indefinitely and help you to understand why contemporary painters such as David Hockney found André Derain to be such a major Influence on modern art.
