The Guards Museum, London

Explore the incredible history and uniforms of the five regiments of the Royal Foot Guards at this London military museum.

This enchanting museum explains the history and the different and very distinguished uniforms of the five different regiments of Foot Guards: the Grenadier Guards, the Coldstream Guards, the Scots Guards and the Irish and Welsh Guards. These five regiments, together with the two regiments of the Household Cavalry, form the Queen's Household Division, who guard the Sovereign and Royal Palaces. The Foot Guards have both combat soldier and ceremonial roles.

The Museum is great fun for children: they can dress up in a Foot Guard's uniform and complete the Museum Trail, solving puzzles and quizzes to discover information on the uniforms worn by the Foot Guards and the history of the five regiments from their foundation to today.

Opposite the museum is the Guard's Chapel, where the Guards perform concerts by famous composers such as Gershwin and Vivaldi on a regular basis. They also perform in the popular Scarlet and Gold Concerts at Central Hall, Westminster.

Finally, don't miss the shop on the way out. Even if you're not intending to buy anything, there is an enormous collection of lead toy soldiers, with every regiment imaginable engaged in every conceivable action, including ceremonies, through every period of history. There is also a selection of Guards caps, blazers, badges, berets, mugs, bookmarks and T-shirts emblazoned with either an individual regiment or divisional badge.
