Dutch artists in Paris (1789-1914), Exhibition, Petit Palais, Paris: 6 February-13 May 2018

This is a fascinating insight into the “artistic, aesthetic and personal interchanges” of Dutch and French painters living in Paris from the Napoleonic years to the early 20th century. The exhibition is  one of the best of the Spring season,  so book your tickets now to jump the queue.

At the onset of the French Revolution in 1789, the first wave of Dutch painters left home and settled in the artistic centre of Europe: Paris. They would be joined by over a thousand other Dutch painters over the course of the long 19th century (1789-1914). Dutch artists in Paris is the first major exhibition devoted to displaying the ever-changing relationships between French and Dutch painters in Paris, exhibiting 115 works from Dutch, European and American museums.

The exhibition focuses on the work of  nine Dutch artists, taking you through a chronological journey of their stays and their striking impact on both French and Dutch art. While Jacob Maris and George Breitner spread their newly discovered ideas as soon as they returned to Holland, Van Gogh and Johan Jongkind infused the French art scene with Dutch sensibility.

As you wander through the halls of the Petit Palais, the exhibition will describe the various relationships that sprung up between some of the most influential artists in Europe. Van Gogh stayed in Paris for two years, which was enough for the impressionists,  Camille Pissarro, Signac and Emile Bernard to greatly influence his style. Piet Mondrian for his part drew inspiration from his friends Georges Braque and Picasso.

Dutch artists in Paris will introduce you to nine different worlds and styles, crucial to understanding European art either side and during the entirety of the 19th century. Don’t miss out on a visit to the Painter’s Studio,  where you can explore the painters’ various techniques and even try them out for yourself.
