Palais-Royal et Jardin du Palais-Royal, Paris

The Palais-Royal and its courtyard provide a beautiful and historic setting for visitors to come and relax. The peaceful Jardin du Palais-Royal and its surrounding gallery of shops and cafés make this an ideal spot for a stroll.

Originally named Palais Cardinal, the palace was once the home of Cardinal Richelieu, followed by the Queen Mother Anne of Austria and her sons, the future Louis XIV and Philippe of France. The 17th-century palace later became the main residence of the House of Orléans. Although the actual palace interior is closed to visitors, the gardens and courtyard are popular spot for the public. Shaded with lime trees and decorated with ornate fountains and columns, the area is the perfect place for a quiet afternoon or a picnic lunch. The gardens are dotted with lush flowers and perfectly hedged greenery. And beyond the palace, there are quirky shops, restaurants, cafés and galleries in the Palais-Royal arcades.

Eat like Parisian royalty at Grand Véfour, the oldest restaurant in Paris, frequented by Napoleon and Victor Hugo. Complete with lavish decorations and sumptuous French food, you must book well in advance.
