Cognacq-Jay Museum of 18th Century Art, Paris

A well-curated collection of 18th-century portraits and objets d’art, in a spectacular 18th-century hôtel particulier (private mansion) provides a unique insight into the art-de-vivre of the French during one of the most glorious eras in history.

In sync with the theory of its founder, art collector Ernest Cognacq and his wife Marie-Louise Jäy, the collection contains a wide variety of small household objects and artistic works, including fine examples of decorative porcelain and beautifully-crafted personal items. The museum gives a brilliant insight into the art-de-vivre of Parisians in the 18th-century. The museum also provides an intimate perspective on some of the biggest personalities of the time, especially in the salon-styled portrait gallery which features fine examples of the work of painter Boucher, often considered the master of 18th-century portraiture.

The museum also has a calendar of exhibitions, workshops and other events. To find out more about the museum, read our interview with RoseMarie Mousseaux, former director of the Cognacq-Jay.
