Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Paris

Scarcely known to foreigners, the pretty little Théâtre des Champs-Elysées has some of the finest operas, concerts and dance performances in the world but with less than 2,000 seats, tickets are not easy to get hold. Occasionally visits are organised around the remarkable interior.

Constructed in 1913 by a group of artists including architects Henry Van de Velde and Auguste Perret, painter and sculptor Antoine Bourdelle, painter Maurice Denis and crystal-maker René Lalique, the opulent opera house holds over 1900 people. The theatre has had some of the world’s most important performances and premieres throughout history, including Vaslav Nijiinsky’s ‘Rite of Spring,’ composed by Igor Stravinsky, premiering the first year of the theatre’s opening. The scandalous ballet, now considered one of Nijinsky’s masterpieces, caused a riot.

Currently, the theatre has numerous classical concerts, operas, dance companies and contemporary artists that perform throughout the year. The main theatre is plush red with gold adornments: a perfect venue framing incredible performances.
