Monet: The Collector is a rare opportunity to see Monet's private collection.

The art collection of an artist, especially one as famous as Monet is very important and very different to any other art collection because it lets us learn even more about the artist. “It was rare for artists to buy as an investment. Their overwhelming concern was admiring what another artist had done. They often really loved other artists’ work and using it as an example and an inspiration. It was much more personal and tied to their own creative process.” This is particularly exciting because not only is Monet one of the most famous french artists, but he was very secretive about his personal life too. The Musée Marmottan-Monet, which can be found in the seizeième-arrondissement of Paris, not far from the Tour Eiffel and Arc du Triomphe, has teamed up with other galleries in France, Germany and America to bring this rare chance to you.

Impressionnisme is an art movement that started in Paris in the 19th Century. At the time it received a lot of opposition from the traditional artists in Paris at the time, because they painted outside of the lines so to speak. They painted quite often en plein air, with short quick brush strokes. This helped to create movement for example the sun twinkling on la Seine. Famous artists include Renoir, Cézanne, Degas, Manet and Matisse. The exhibition showcases several of these alongside each other, and you can see the way they drew inspiration from one another.

The star of the exhibition is undoubtedly Impréssion, soleil levant (Impression, Sunrise) which is the painting known as the birth of Impression, and shows the sun rising over la Seine. It’s such a well-known painting that a trip to this exhibition is worth it for just this painting.
