Pyramid of Caius Cestius, Rome

This ancient pyramid was built by Caius Cestius Epulonius as a tomb for himself.

This ancient pyramid was built by Caius Cestius Epulonius as a tomb for himself.  Caius Cestius was a wealthy Roman magistrate.  Made of concrete and brick, then covered with Carrara marble, the pyramid is 36 meters high and 29 meters wide.  This colossal pyramid is a site you definitely want to see!

This type of funerary architecture was influenced by Egypt.  Caius Cestius constructed the pyramid between 18 BC and 12 BC between Via Ostiensis and Via della Marmorata.  Today it can be found in the Aurelian Walls.  On the side of the pyramid are inscriptions which state that the pyramid was built in just 330 days.

Although it is very unlikely to have found an Egyptian pyramid in the middle of the Eternal City, it is one of Rome’s highlights.  Through many restorations and renovations, the pyramid will be around for more centuries to come!

Visitors are only allowed to visit the Pyramid of Caius Cestius with a guided tour to ensure that tons of information is given.
