La Fenice Opera Theatre, Venice

Teatro La Fenice is one of the most famous and prestigious theatres not only in Europe but even in the world, the site of many famous operatic premieres.

Teatro La Fenice is an opera house in Venice (Italy), founded in 1792. It is one of the most famous theatres in Europe, where many lyrical works are currently performed and also the seat of the International Contemporary Music Festival and of the New Year’s Concert.

Its name (as Fenice is the Italian word for Phoenix) reflects its role in permitting the ‘Noble Society of palchettisti’, which owned the theatre (previously called Theatre of Saint Benedict), to "rise from the ashes" after losing the use of the theatre itself because of legal problems (and then because of two fires, occurring in 1836 and 1996 respectively).

The Theatre will formally become property of the Municipality in 1876, after the Society’s dissolution.
