The Museum of Natural History (Naturhistorisches Museum) of Vienna hosts the vastest naturalistic collection, accumulated since the 18th century from the Austrian lineage of the Hapsburgs.

It was constructed at the same time as the Kunstistorisches Museum, that appear right in front of each other.  The two twin buildings appear in a symmetrical manner on the gardens of Maria Theresien Platz.

In the Naturhistorisches Museum one can find over 20 million objects of every kind: insects, precious stones, minerals, skeletons of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals.  There is also space for a planetarium, where one can admire the showing of stars and celestial bodies, but also spectacular reconstructions of the prehistoric world and abyss.

Advice from Divento…

La Venere di Willendorf: a small statue dating back to almost 30.000 years ago that depicts a woman of steatopygic physique.  It is the most well-known of Paleolithic Venus’, one of the most famous representations of life and fertility.

Entering in the cubical and dark room that hosts the most precious artifact, one is wrapped up in fascination of the discovery, reliving, at least for a moment, the same emotions of an explorer that finds a hidden treasure.
