Neidhart Frescoes, Vienna

Hidden in an apartment at number 19 of Tuchlauben, in the center of Vienna, the Frescoes of Neidhart were discovered by chance in 1979.

In 1979, while carrying out restoration works in an apartment at number 19 Tuchlauben, in the center of Vienna, workers discovered frescoes dating back to the early 1400s, portraying scenes from the works of German minnesinger Neidhart von Reuental.

His knightly songs belong to a very similar literary style to that of the poetry disseminated in the Occitan territories between France and Italy.

The German minnesingers usually wrote poems and songs often accompanied by melodies. Neidhart was one of the most important representatives of the German tradition -in fact, his portrait is included in the famous Manesse Codex, the largest anthology of minnesinger dating back to the High Middle Ages.
