The Austrian Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna, better known as MAK is entirely dedicated to the use of art in the re-styling and decoration of everyday objects.

The museum was founded in the 19th Century alongside the Applied Arts University in Vienna, right next door. Here, design, history and art meet, giving witness to the excellence of the Austrian industry.

The MAK houses a collection which dates from the medieval period until the contemporary period, passing through all the art movememnts which most influenced applied art, such as Art Nouveau and Art Décor.

The famous Thornet n.14 seats are also on show at the MAK, used in hundreds of cafes and restaurants across Vienna, all produced in the capital itself as part of the establishment which created the ‘kunsthaus’, developed by the eccentric architect, Hunderfwasser.

There are also many objects created by Wiener Werkstätte, the Viennese production house specialised in design which made Austrian industrial art fashionable in the 30s and the 19th Century.
