Galleria dell'Accademia, Florence

Welcome to the home of Michelangelo’s David!

Welcome to the home of Michelangelo’s David!  The Accademia Gallery is a magnificent Florentine museum of art and music that displays sculptures, paintings, operas, and instruments.  Beginning with the Hall of the Colossus, you will see Giambologna’s Rape of the Sabine Women.  The marble sculpture portrays three innocent women carved from solely one block of marble.

For all the music lovers out there, the Grand Ducal collection is perfect!  There are over 40 instruments to see as music was a prominent component in the life of the Medicis.  Moving forward, is the Hall of the Prisoners.  Here you can find the David.  This colossal sculpture is definitely the highlight of the Galleria!

The final section is devoted to Florentine Gothic paintings.  The collection consists of altarpieces by Giotto, Orcagna, and Daddi.

Don't miss the Divento interview with Angelo Tartuferi, director of the Galleria dell’Accademia from 2013 to 2015.
