A garden square near the British Museum, Bloomsbury Square is a very pleasant spot in which to eat a picnic lunch while taking a break from delving through the British Museum's many halls and exhibits. Originally a late 17th century development (although nothing from this period survives), the square has passed reasonably quietly through history. Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli lived in Number 6 for a short time as a child and the building - on the eastern side - was on the shortlist to become London's city hall in 2000, although a new building was eventually created in Southwark for this purpose.

The square features briefly in the musical Oliver! (based on Charles Dickens' novel Oliver Twist), and the second movement of British composer Vaughn Williams' Symphony Number 2 is supposed to represent the square.
